Breaking the "Rules": Wedding Traditions

A lot has changed since mom got married! While we appreciate and cherish those moments shared, it's time to take out the old and put in the new.

There are a lot of wedding faux pas out there—don't let the groom see your dress until the big day, don't ask for money, and you can't invite crazy Aunt Linda to just the ceremony. With there being so much you are told you "can't" do, how are you supposed to make your wedding for YOU?

Breaking wedding traditions is the new craze! Brides all over are dishing out creative ways to do something a little out of the norm to make their weddings a little more personal. Here are some of the best non-traditional 'traditions' we saw in 2021:

The Final Dance

Everyone knows about the first dance between the bride and groom—your first introduction as hubby and wife! We love the first dance and it's such a special moment to share, but you're sharing it with so many people. Doing a last dance is the perfect way to share a special moment between you and your love and make it even more intimate than the first.. Send everyone out and take a breather, girl. You deserve it! End your incredible day with a sweet private dance with your groom. This time, all you have to do is enjoy each other and truly dance like no one is watching…because no one is.

The First Look: Bridal Party Edition

For a lot of brides, the bridal party is full of the ride-or-dies. These are the people that have seen you at your very best, your very worst, and everything in between. We love our significant others, but the besties are forever! Make another memory for your life album and dedicate a first look to the squad. Not only does it make a great photo-op, but it's a great way to get out any pre-wedding jitters. Just be sure to secure a separate space to get ready!

Mismatched Bridesmaids

On the topic of the girl squad, let's talk about attire.

The usual go-to is to have the bridal party in matching gowns. We've seen trends where brides have the MOH stand out in a different color, but not much variety to be seen elsewhere. All of your bridesmaids are a part of your life
for a different reason.

Each one has a different style, personality, body type, and so many other unique quirks! Letting them pick their own dresses (or suits) is a great way to display their individuality. And don't worry about it not matching! The outfits don't have to be completely different and random. You can designate a color or fabric, but let them pick the style. Another great option is to keep everyone in a color scheme that matches your wedding. Not only is it unique, but it's a great way to keep the besties comfortable all day.

Private Dinner

Let's circle back around to the couple, shall we? We know the reception can be a little overwhelming. It's kind of an unsaid practice that the happy couple makes their rounds and says their hellos and thank yous during the reception. Add in the dancing, the cake cutting, the games, and there's not much time for a break. Fuel yourself to dance the night away with a private dinner after your ceremony! This gives you a moment of peace and almost feels like a mini-date. Then you'll be ready to go for all the reception shenanigans.

Disposable Cameras For Guests

This can be a great idea for the alternative bride. It definitely pays to have professional photos, but sometimes the sweetest memories are from your loved ones' point of view. Use them in conjunction with your professional photographer for moments that might have gone unseen otherwise. You can also grab one for yourself to capture your favorite memories. If you aren't into buying tons of cameras for your guests, a polaroid camera does the trick! Stock up on film and pass it around. It makes for a great activity and memories to last a lifetime.

Wedding traditions are definitely special and each one holds its own value for you and your loved ones. We know that some are here to stay, but why not have a little fun while you can? After all, you only get this day once.
